Sr Project Instrument Engineer

Provide daily support to Operations and Maintenance which includes leading control and instrument activities, ensuring hardware and software platforms are operating without fault at high reliability levels, supporting operations during troubleshooting, upset or emergencies, and improving instruments and controls. 

Provide for specification, design, purchase, installation and commissioning of instrumentation, control systems, SIS system for projects to maintain, or improve refinery safety, profitability, efficiency and reliability.

Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Creates or revises loop, field junction box, marshalling and process instrument drawings.
  • Provides orifice calculations/specifications, valve sizing/specifications, and miscellaneous instrument specifications for Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering. 
  • Supports equipment maintenance of Foxboro DCS, Modicon PLC, and Triconex PLC, and supports logic functions of Modicon and Triconex.
  • Troubleshoots instrument problems for Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering. 
  • Checks P&ID’s for correct instrumentation and conformance to Valero standards for changes management and project work. 
  • Attends project review meeting for reviewing process and instrument diagrams (P&ID’s). 
  • Plans and supervises the work of instrumentation engineering and construction contractors. 
  • Designs, implements, and maintains Safety Instrumental Systems.  Evaluates and implements new instrument technologies.
  • Develops five-year plan for instrument upgrade projects. 
  • Provides training and develops training plans for I&E Technicians.

  • Basic skill using Microsoft Office programs (i.e., Word and Excel).

Minimum of 10-20 years experience in all phases of instrument/electrical systems design and installation required. 3 years experience providing instrument project engineering in an operating plant environment.

 Bachelors of Science degree or higher degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering required.
